Job Opportunities with AHN
About AHN Consulting
We're a growing team of animal health professionals who strive to deliver independent, scientific information to our wonderful clients. We are a leading provider of trusted information and a promoter of excellence. We work hard every day to provide practical, relevant, evidence-based animal health and nutrition advice and services to improve livestock and producer health, welfare and productivity.
We are not a traditional veterinary business. We combine veterinary medicine with livestock nutrition, farm management and common sense and work with our clients to drive production and profitability.
About the Job
We are looking for another veterinarian to join our team. This is not a typical clinical vet role, so if you’re tired of being covered in cow-shit, this job might be for you! Your role will involve farm visits that look at the whole farm picture - livestock health, nutrition and pastures. We service extensive beef, sheep and goat clients and there is a significant component of livestock nutrition involved in this role. You will be involved in developing rations and budgets for on-farm production and drought feeding. Your work will involve working with groups, teaching producers, answering queries via phone and email, conducting zoom consultations, writing reports, building spreadsheets, contributing to research projects and doing in-house parasitology.
Essential Criteria
A veterinary degree registered in NSW.
A strong work ethic, resilience and common-sense approach.
The ability to translate science into information that is useable on-farm.
An understanding of livestock enterprises in Australia.
An ability to talk to and form strong relationships with livestock producers, other staff, community and stakeholders.
Practical skills, good time management and an efficient approach to tasks.
A Class C drivers licence.
Willingness to move to Coonamble, NSW.
Preferred Criteria
Experience in private veterinary practice.
Understanding of heard health, disease diagnosis and preventative medicine on farms.
An understanding of ruminant nutrition and the ability to apply it to livestock systems; and the ability to be a self-starting learner to put the effort in to fill knowledge gaps.
The ability to use Microsoft Excel proficiently.
The ability to write engaging content and present confidently to groups of people.
Hobbies and the desire for a lifestyle that immerses you in one of the best rural towns you’ll find!
What we can offer you…
This is a permanent, full-time role. There are no after-hours required. Four weeks annual leave and one week study leave. Salary and conditions will be negotiable but will be commensurate with experience. Progression will be offered, how fast and lucrative it is depends on how hard you work and upskill once you get here. The world (and this job) is your oyster if you’ve got the right attitude and you love it as much as we do!
We understand that this role is a non-typical vet role and extensive upskilling will occur in the initial stages of the job to give you the varied skill set you need to fulfil your role. We are committed to providing you supportive mentoring alongside Dr Jillian Kelly in ruminant nutrition, building rations, assessing pastures, doing budgets and applying your veterinary knowledge to farming systems. We do expect you to be able to work independently on some tasks though and have a go at most things as part of this learning process. A trial period will be given to selected candidates. Further study in ruminant nutrition will be supported.
We envisage that with time, hard work, mentoring, practice and support you will develop your own client base within the business.
If you love farms, livestock and the bush but are looking for a change from traditional veterinary practice, please get in touch. This job will give you many skills in addition to your veterinary degree and you will contribute to a team that is making a big impact on farms across five states.
